Living in

Jane Austen’s World

Want to spend the morning living like Jane Austen? ****

Then join us on Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 8:15 am until 1:30 pm.

Luncheon and Lecture

JASNA President Elect Claire Bellanti will travel from California to present to us.....

“You can Get a Parasol at Whitby’s”:  Jane Austen and Circulating Libraries.

Circulating libraries made reading fashionable when books were expensive, but in Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Collins snubs a book at the Bennets after the book was announced to be from a circulating library.  Why would a stuffy clergyman refuse to read such a book and why did young ladies like Lydia read little else?  No need to travel to Sanditon, President-Elect Bellanti will have the answers for us.

Claire Bellanti holds an MA in History from UNLV

and an MBA from UCLA.   Retired from a 35-year career

as a Library Professional at UCLA, she specialized in

public services and preservation storage facilities.  In addition

to lectures and articles in the area of her professional interests,

Claire has spoken and written on the Sadleir Collection of 19th

Century Literature, located in the UCLA Library Special Collections

Department.  A member of JASNA since 1987,

she has actively participated in her Region as Treasurer ,

Regional Coordinator and Co-Coordinator of the JASNA

Annual General Meeting, 2004 in Los Angeles, California.

She also served as JASNA’s Vice-President for Regions                                     @Rupert Thorpe

from 2009-2012. Although it can be difficult to squeeze anything

more in alongside Jane Austen, Claire’s other interests include

19th century British and Russian history and literature, knitting, and quilting.

This program is funded in part by the Jane Austen Society of North America.

Workshops

Each participant will be asked to rank the workshops (1, 2, 3) but will be guaranteed to be in a workshop of their 1st or 2nd choice.

Dance

Learn how to dance like that husband-catching, fine-eyed Lizzie Bennet.

Louise Siddons will teach us three period dances popular in Jane Austen’s England.  Two dances will focus on those new to dancing so that we can all participate in the evening’s

Netherfield Ball and also give us an introduction to a medium level dance so that we can show off our abilities.  Instruction will be on a carpeted floor.

Jewelry

Make a Regency inspired pendant and earring set that even Lady Catherine would have found enchanting. Each participant in the Jewelry workshop will complete a Regency inspired jewelry set of  earrings and pendant. June Lubowinski has designed three sets based upon her research and you may select the style and color you would like to make in the workshop.   Please fill out the  selection form (link below) and include that with your registration (also, linked below).  All materials will be provided.

Penmanship

Join the ranks of those letter writing hunks Darcy, Robert Martin and Captain Wentworth

(okay, maybe not Captain Wentworth in just one workshop!) in the penmanship class.

Debi Sementelli, a calligrapher and award winning font developer, will present a workshop for all those who love beautiful writing.  The workshop will be an introduction to penmanship in a calligraphic style.  She will guide us through the strokes and formation of

letters in a copperplate hand.  You will be provided with all the materials required.

                                               Registration Fee $75.00

(includes workshops, luncheon and Valet parking)
